July 2015 Events:

Member Show – Gretha Lindwood –Fresh Air” Pastel Landscape Exhibit

Art On Broadway invites you to a special exhibit of Gretha Lindwood’s works done in pastel on artist grade sandpaper. Lindwood’s show runs from July 1, 2015 through August 1, 2015.

Known primarily as an artist who works en plein air, a French term meaning in the outdoors, Lindwood’s paintings evoke the sense of space, sounds, smells, and colors of the locale. She states, “I use the vibrant, luminous colors of soft pastel sticks and make my marks on the dry surface of artist grade sandpaper to record my impressions of our natural world. I’d like viewers to feel they could step into the scene of my paintings and to really get a sense of the beauty I felt in that moment.”

The public is invited to a reception on Saturday, July 11, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The gallery will provide refreshments and Bridal Veil Winery will offer free wine tasting, plus sell wine by the glass and/or bottle..

Guest Artist Wall –“Art Smart 3rd Graders Make Colorful Choices”

Almost 200 years ago English essayist, poet and writer Leigh Hunt wrote, “Colors are the smiles of nature.” That being said, the exhibit at Art On Broadway’s guest wall in July is grinning from ear to ear. Third grade students enrolled in Art Smart Oregon’s art education program have each chosen bright and cheery colors for their expressive drawings on display at the gallery’s guest wall.

Organized in May, 2013, Art Smart is a 501(c)(3) which provides art classes to children in grades K through 5 at low or no cost to students. Founders of the program also strive to educate the public about the benefits of an arts education within a well-rounded curriculum. Art involvement has proven to show gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills.

The gallery wishes to thank Blick Art Materials in Beaverton and the Beaverton Arts Commission for their support in making this exhibit possible.

Special Events for July:

First Friday – July 3

First Friday Hours are 5-8 p.m. – AOB Stays Open Until 9 p.m.

Gallery Artist, Rae Campbell, will conduct a fused glass demonstration on First Friday in July, starting around 5 p.m. Visitors to the gallery will have a chance to create their own fused glass ornament under Rae’s instruction. Don’t miss this opportunity to try your hand at glass design. Light refreshments will be provided and Bridal Veil Winery will be on hand offering free wine tasting. Even though First Friday officially ends at 8 p.m., Art On Broadway stays open until 9 p.m.

The focus of July’s First Friday will take place just down the street from the gallery where Beaverton Bakery will celebrate its 90 Anniversary as a bakery. Crothers & Others Band will entertain, the bakery will serve free strawberry shortcake, and Mayor Denny Doyle will sit in the dunking tank from 5 to 6 p.m. Old-fashioned games such as Bean Bag Toss will be part of the celebration with fun prizes while supplies last.

Two other sites within the downtown will offer free live music, so be sure to put on your walking shoes. Bodacious, a four piece band, will play at Beaverton Florists on the corner of 2nd and Watson, and a student jazz band from Beaverton Music will entertain shoppers and diners on 1st Street between Watson and Angel.

If walking isn’t your thing, hop into the free limo that provides service around the perimeter of the historic downtown district. Look for the nearest “Limo Stop” sign and wait for the limo to pull up. It makes a continuous loop throughout the evening and you can hop in or hop out at any of the five stops.

Many of the participating businesses offer special promotions each First Friday, so check out their promotions  –  a beer garden and barbecue at Broadway Saloon, $1 ice cream cones at the Sub Station, a chance to win a shopping spree with the owner of Peonies & Possibilities plus a sale on all her patriotic merchandise, and of course the fused glass demo at Art On Broadway.
